Certificate replacing the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in Abruzzo

Published: 06/11/2017
Last update: 09/05/2023

The Card offers all EU citizens who are temporarily in another Member State (whatever the reason for their stay) direct access to the health services of the host country, under the same conditions as residents.

Every citizen of the Union (employee or self-employed worker, tourist, student, pensioner, etc.) to obtain medical assistance can go directly to the health services of the host country by simply showing the Health Card.
The Italian European health card covers unforeseen and necessary health services during a temporary stay (e.g. holiday, study, etc.) in the Member States of the European Union and in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
It cannot be used for planned treatment or by choice abroad.

The Italian European health card is not valid, as a rule, in the case of work abroad (even occasional) or in the case of registration, for the stay, with the competent foreign authorities.
In any case, the card is not valid if you are not entitled to benefits on the basis of Italian legislation.
Interested persons are required to inform their local ASL as soon as possible of any change in their personal or family situation that affects their rights to healthcare services (for example, starting work abroad, etc.).
