Treatment is paid for by the competent health institutions in your state. Coverage of costs relating to medical treatment in another EU state can be provided through:
- direct assistance: the health service of your country pays directly to the health service of the country of treatment (Care in the European Union: what to know (salute.gov.it)
- indirect assistance: you advance the costs to healthcare facilities or to public, private or private affiliated professionals in the foreign country of treatment and then request reimbursement from your competent administrative healthcare facility. Remember to check whether prior authorization is required for your country and for the service you are interested in, which you can obtain by contacting your reference healthcare administrative structure.
If you need further information, consult the National contact point page, which the Ministry of Health has set up to facilitate access to cross-border healthcare for patients from other EU countries..
